CHICAGO — Cale Makar has made it to the big leagues

The Brooks Bandits defenceman was drafted fourth overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in Chicago Friday evening.

Makar becomes the highest NHL draft pick in Alberta Junior Hockey League history, finishing ahead of new teammate Joe Colborne, who was drafted 16th overall by Boston in 2008.

In the regular season, Makar scored 24 goals and notched 51 assists to lead the AJHL in scoring among defencemen. He helped the Bandits win the AJHL championship and the Western Canada Cup. He was voted the Canadian Junior Hockey League MVP in May.
