MEDICINE HAT, AB — City crews are outside Wednesday performing its annual inspection of the Saamis Tepee.

The Tepee, which has been standing in Medicine Hat since 1991, was closed this morning to allow crews to perform its yearly inspection and install a new item on the 215 foot high structure.

“They’re installing a safety gate at the top of the Tepee where the workers would be doing work from time to time,” said Randy Follett, manager of cultural development with the city. “There’s a need of a safety gate at the top there, and they’re installing it right now.”

Follett says crews inspect the the structure once a year for any damage or stress from the elements. He adds a year ago, the tips were repaired following the inspection.

“As you can imagine, there’s quite a level of wind stress on there from time to time,” he said. “That’s why the annual inspection takes place, to make sure anything that does pop up is taken care of.”

Crews began work at 6 a.m., and they’re expected to be finished by 1 p.m. The tepee site itself is closed during the duration of the work, but the nearby trails can still be accessed.

Video of the work can be viewed below.
