Medicine Hat Fire gives update on Shannon Drive blaze

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The investigation into a house fire over the long weekend continues for the Medicine Hat Fire Department.

Shortly after 6:00 pm on Friday, all three Medicine Hat stations responded to fire in the 100 block of Shannon Drive.

Witnesses said smoke was rising from all four corners of the house as firefighters arrived on scene.

Deputy Fire Chief Brian Webster said his crew worked quickly to get the blaze under control.

“Guys went in and did the attack, within 45 minutes the fire was under control,” said Webster. “There was nobody home at the time, the pets had actually been rescued by our guys as well.”

Most of the fire was contained to the upper portion of building, with the attic and roof sustaining significant damage.

Webster credited the location of the home, as well as the hard work of his crews in knocking down the fire as quickly as they did.

“It’s fairly close to the station,” he said. “The guys rolled up on scene, it was right at shift change, the guys had just come on duty. It’s just what we train for.”

Webster adds there is no official word yet on the cause of the fire.

“The fire is under investigation,” he said. “Our investigator has just finished at the scene, so he’s just coming back to do his reports up.”

Medicine Hat Fire do not have an estimate on the total damaged cause as of Tuesday.
