Seattle Thunderbirds win WHL Championship

REGINA, SASK. – For the first time in franchise history, the Seattle Thunderbirds are Western Hockey League champions.

Heading into the third period down 3-1, the Thunderbirds came back to force overtime against the Regina Pats on Sunday, with Alexander True earning the game winner in the first overtime period, allowing the team to raise the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Keegan Kolesar and Ryan Gropp each had a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds through the game and Sami Moilanen had the remaining goal for the team. Ethan Bear had two assists.

Austin Wagner, Sam Steel and Josh Mahura scored for Regina.

Carl Stankowski made 28 saves on 31 shots during the win, while Tyler Brown of the Pats stopped 39 shots.

Thunderbirds centre Mathew Barzal was named the playoffs MVP.

The Thunderbirds were making their second consecutive WHL Championship appearance, after losing to the Brandon Wheat Kings last year.

The Thunderbirds join the QMJHL Champion Saint John Seadogs, OHL Champion Erie Otters and host team Windsor Spitfires at the Mastercard Memorial Cup, which begins on Thursday in Windsor.
