MEDICINE HAT, AB — Alberta Health Services has announced it is postponing elective surgeries scheduled for today and Wednesday at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

More than 60 surgeries were postponed due to a water quality concern impacting the ability to sterilize and reprocess medical devices at the hospital.

According to a news release, postponing the elective surgeries will allow the hospital to maintain their supply of devices for emergency surgeries while AHS investigates the issue.

Affected patients are being advised by AHS about postponements. Patients will be contacted again by their doctor to reschedule procedures as soon as possible.

AHS says they are not able to anticipate the impact on surgeries or procedures beyond Wednesday, but are working to return to a normal surgical schedule as soon as possible.
