MEDICINE HAT, AB — In an effort to deal with increasing issues surrounding mental health the City of Medicine Hat is helping to host mental health awareness and training workshops.

The health, safety and environment department has received a grant of $7,775 through Alberta Labour and Occupational Health and Safety policy and program development.

In partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) the city will be hosting training for city staff and the general public on May 9th and 10th.

In a report to city council it was noted that issues related to workplace mental health are rising.

“I think all you have to do is think about our economic situation,” said Councillor Les Pearson. “Our suicide rate is high, there’s still unemployment in our city, we have the largest number of low paid workers in the province, those are all stressful things.”

The city says having the right training and awareness can help reduce the stigma around mental health and is significant for supporting employees in all occupations.

The training is being facilitated by Mental Health Works, part of the CMHA.

The city will be advertising the public workshops soon and the sessions will be held at several locations including City Hall, the Heritage Pavilion and the Medicine Hat College Theatre between May 9th and 10th.
