Oakes bail hearing set for April 19

SWIFT CURRENT, SK — Connie Oakes remains in custody after making her first court appearance in a Swift Current courtroom Monday morning.

Oakes and a co-accused were arrested last Wednesday after an alleged stabbing at a home just outside of Maple Creek.

The two were facing several charges, including aggravated assault and forcible confinement.

Oakes was charged along with Wendy Scott in the murder of Casey Armstrong here in Medicine Hat back in 2011.

That charge was stayed on April 28th, 2016 but can be reopened within a year.

Katherine Thompson with the Justice and Solicitor General’s office said it’s unclear whether Oakes’ new charges in Saskatchewan will have an impact on the re-opening of her second degree murder charge in Alberta.

“It’s inappropriate for the Alberta crown to comment on any charges an individual may be facing outside of Alberta or the impact that non-Alberta based charges have on the deadline of a stayed case,” she said over the phone from Edmonton.

Crown prosecutors in Swift Current said a bail hearing for Oakes has been postponed until April 19th.

A bail verification report has been ordered to determine what kind of plan Oakes and Ricky Lee Rockthunder have in place if they are granted bail.

A no contact order was also issued between Oakes and Rockthunder.

CHAT News spoke with an employee at the court house who said a judge had ordered bail. However, after calls to the crown prosecutor, that information was confirmed to be false.
