Electric third period leads to Tigers 3-2 win over Wheat Kings, complete series sweep

DAUPHIN, MB — It’s a sweep.

David Quenneville scored a pair of goals, Michael Bullion made 21 saves, and the Medicine Hat Tigers put and end to the Brandon Wheat Kings season with a series-clinching 3-2 victory on Wednesday night in Dauphin, MB.

This caps off a four-game sweep for the black-and-orange. Not once did the Tigers trail at any point of any of the four games.

All five goals of this one came in the final 20 minutes of play.

Logan Thompson was finally solved 24 seconds into the third period. Clayton Kirichenko, on the Tigers 38th shot of the contest, recorded his third of the post-season to break a scoreless tie.

David Quenneville scored his first of the night just over a minute later, but any momentum was quickly halted by Reid Duke. The overage Vegas Golden Knights prospect ended Michael Bullion’s bid for a shutout less than two minutes after Quenneville’s marker.

Quenneville’s second tally of the night came on the powerplay with 7:51 to play. Cale Clague made things interesting, cutting the Tigers lead to one with less than five minutes to go, but Bullion shut the door from there on out.

Thompson was busy from the get go. The Calgary-product faced a series-high 54 shots through the game. Bullion turned aside 21 of 23 shots fired his way.

Fittingly so, the three star recipients were given to the three Wheat Kings who played their final game in the WHL. Tyler Couter took the games top honour, while Duke and Dmitry Osipov were given the second and third stars respectively.

This marks the second straight game in which Medicine Hat broke free in the third period. In game three, the Tabbies threw four goals on the board in the final frame on route to a 6-2 win.
