MEDICINE HAT, AB — The provincial and federal governments announced joint funding to improve affordable housing accommodations in Medicine Hat.

Joint funding of approximately $260,000 was announced Friday afternoon at Maranatha Villa, a seniors’ housing complex on Eighth Street SE. The money will be distributed among nine buildings owned or operated by the CORE Association or the Medicine Hat Community Housing Society.

The announcement said senior citizens will benefit the most from the funding, as much of the investment will go towards renovating and replacing seniors’ housing. The funding has been allocated for projects such as hot water tank replacements, furnace upgrades and roof repairs.

“It’s time and that’s not to say there haven’t been investments before this time,” said Medicine Hat MLA Bob Wanner. “This is protecting that investment for the future.”

“This stuff is really extending the life of the buildings,” said Robin Miiller with the Medicine Hat Community Housing Society. “So these are things that have a life cycle so after 15 years, certain elements of a building need to be replaced.”

Maranatha Villa has been open since 1981. It will receive $50,000 from the funding to replace the building’s fire alarm panel.

Luther Manor and Legion Manor will also see some of the funding, as well as six other properties.
