Medicine Hat, AB — Cities across Alberta will be holding municipal elections in 2017.

Individuals considering running for a spot on Council or as Mayor should be aware of the new required registration process.

Anyone interested in running must file an application with their city’s Returning Officer before accepting or allocating any funds towards towards their campaign.

Medicin Hat City Clerk Angela Cruickshank said candidates who don’t comply with the rules could face penalties.

“If they do not register and they do collect money then they are liable for a fine,” she said “So it is important that they register beforehand and this is in addition to the regular requirement that they file nomination papers.”

The forms can be picked up from the city clerk’s office or found on the City of Medicine Hat’s website.

Cruickshank said the new rules were put in place by the province to help residents ensure candidates soliciting donations are legitimately running.

As of February 22nd, six people have registered to run in the municipal election in Medicine Hat.

The election will take place on Monday October 16, 2017.
