MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers will retire the second jersey in franchise history next week.

The late Tom Lysiak’s jersey will be retired prior to the start of the Tigers’ home game against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Feb. 25. Lysiak’s number nine will hang alongside Lanny McDonald’s number eight jersey.

Lysiak captured back-to-back league scoring titles during the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons, the only Tiger to do so. Lysiak scored a total of 297 points, including a historic 10 point game against Edmonton which still stands as a league record today.

Lysiak played 195 games as a Tiger, scoring 118 goals and collecting 209 assists for 327 career points, eighth all-time in franchise history. He led the Tigers to their first WHL championship in 1973.

Lysiak was drafted by the Atlanta Flames in 1973, and led the Flames in scoring for five of his six seasons with the club. Lysiak played seven seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, and finished his career with 292 goals and 551 assists, before retiring in 1986.

Lysiak died of leukemia on May 30, 2016.

Each fan in attendance will receive a limited edition commemorative poster courtesy of the Medicine Hat Tigers. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as ceremonies will start at 7:30 p.m.
