MEDICINE HAT, AB — A familiar name returned to the top of the leader board at the Medicine Hat Curling Club’s annual senior Bonspiel on Wednesday.

In the final game of the three day tournament, Terry Devalter’s rink took home the cash prize in the ‘A’ final, defeating Renny Hallam’s rink 6-4 Wednesday afternoon.

“I think anytime you are successful in anything it always feels good,” said Devalter following the victory. “This certainly does.”

Devalter finished runner-up in last year’s bonspiel, and had his name printed on the trophy three years ago after running through the competition without suffering a loss.

Devalter and Hallam were close up until the fifth end. Devalter’s rink scored three points, which helped them cruise to a victory.

“It was just a mistake by them,” he said. “Renny’s first rock probably curled a little more than he thought it would, and it was a mistake.

“I made a good freeze with mine and he didn’t quite get the freeze perfect, and I had to bump for three.”

Devalter, who curls with Lloyd Robinson, Murray Haubrich and Ken Bachmeier, gave full credit to his team for their play during the tournament, saying the first-place finish couldn’t have happened without them.

“I just think we get along very well,” he said. “We like to curl together, and we get along well, and I think that’s the biggest thing.”

Devalter also had praise for Hallam, saying they always have a good game against each other when they play.

The Medicine Hat Curling Club was busy Wednesday afternoon as the bonspiel wrapped up.

Ron Ludwar’s rink were victorious 8-1 over Ed Gertner in the ‘B’ final. Harvey Moch skipped his team to a 7-2 win over Larry Rinholm’s rink in the ‘C’ final. Garth Seitz won a close game over Corey Perrin in the ‘D’ final and Daryl Hubich won 7-2 against Sheila Rumberg in the ‘E’ final.

In the master’s division, John Elton needed only four ends to claim the championship, defeating Vern Herter 8-1.

Jim Poersch skipped his team to a 7-4 win over Vance Elder in the master’s division consolation game.
