MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat Police were kept busy over the New Year’s Eve weekend, responding to three separate incidents in the city.

On Saturday, at approximately 10:40 p.m., police were called to the After Work Oasis pub after a dispute broke out inside the establishment.

According to police, the dispute was between two men and continued outside where a male was stabbed by the other man.

Police arrested a 32-year-old man who now faces charges of aggravated assault. The victim was taken to Medicine Hat Hospital where he will undergo surgery for serious but non life threatening injuries.

At this point, it is unknown if the two men were known to each other. Police say they are still investigating and will be reviewing video from the pub.

Police were also called to Strathcona Island Park  at the same time after a man was located with serious injuries inside the park. Police investigation has determined the male was assaulted with a weapon, and the man was been airlifted to Calgary with life-threatening injuries.

Police are asking any witnesses of the two events event to call police at 403-529-8481 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police were called out to an weapons complaint at approximately 3:50 a.m. at Ross View Place SE, after receiving reports of a distraught man who potentially had a firearm at a residence.

Police located the individual and attempted to negotiate with him for 40 minutes. Officers say the male refused to show his hands so the decision was made to deploy an Arwen round to his leg. Arwen is a non-lethal projectile round.

“The whole idea is to incapacitate a subject so we’re able to safely approach and not use lethal force,” said Inspector Brent Secondiak, adding that it’s rare for police to deploy an Arwen round. “Once every year, maybe every other year, so we don’t use them often.”

The man was incapacitated and police were able to arrest him. Police say the 18-year-old man was not injured and was taken to the Medicine Hat Hospital for assessment. The man was charged with resisting a peace officer.

No firearm was found on the individual.
