Medicine Hat, AB – Being a mother of four, Nikki Bateman wasn’t sure what to do with all the clothes her kids were growing out of.

That’s one of the reasons why she, with the help of her own mom Polly, decided to open Little Munchkins Clothing and Such.

Another reason was giving back to Medicine Hat.

“We started it for the love of our community. People donate stuff and I volunteer in the morning and my mom and partner volunteers in the afternoon.” Said Nikki. “And then we donate the money back to local mom-child charities.”

Everything in the store is donated and Nikki and Polly have been able to give over $5,000 to charities and families throughout Medicine Hat since they opened their doors a year ago.

They sell children’s clothing, toys, books, shoes and maternity wear.

The duo have focused on keeping prices low. Pricing items based off category rather than brand name. The average item is around three or four dollars.

“To be able to fill a whole bag for two, three, five, 10 dollars. It’s been a real joy to see how people are happy with it.” Said Polly.

The store also offers a rack of free clothing, in hopes to help families that may need a little of extra.

“If there’s any small issues with the clothing and we can’t sell it, then there are families that need a little help or grandma’s that need clothes if their backyard, or outdoor play.” Explained Nikki.

As a Grandmother, Polly says her favourite part is seeing the store full of kids.

“I think the most rewarding part are the children. We’re very children friendly. I, as a grandmother, get to sometimes hold the baby or amuse the child while Mom shops. That’s been really a lot of fun for me.”

Little Munchkins is open and accepts donations Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday 10 a.m. until 2 p.m..

Nikki and Polly also say that they are always looking for volunteers to help run the store. To get in touch, visit their Facebook page or in person downtown at 607 2 St SE.
