YORKTON, SK – Medicine Hat’s demolition of Saskatchewan continued on Thursday night, as the Mavericks opened a two-game set with the Yorkton Cardinals via a 15-1 stomping.

Carson Johnson continued his impressive 2018 season early in the first inning, hitting a Ryan Thrasher offering to right field to score David Salguiero from second to open the scoring.

With the bases loaded, Thrasher then walked Louie Canjura to bring in another run, before Sal Rodriguez converted on an RBI single to stretch the Mavericks lead to 3-0.

Julien Ly and Michael Conn picked up their own RBI singles to bring Colton Wright and Canjura around the bases, while Salgueiro hit into a fielder’s choice in his second at-bat of the inning but was able to cash Rodriguez.

Already holding a 6-0 lead, Medicine Hat added a seventh run courtesy of a ball hit to centre field by Johnson in the third inning.

Rodriguez picked up his second RBI of the night in the fourth inning, smacking a double into the outfield to score Wright and make it an 8-0 game.

Still holding onto an eight-run lead into the seventh inning on Thursday, Zack Gray was able to join in on the Mavericks hit parade with a single to centre field that scored two more runs.

Conn added his second and third RBIs of the evening in the eighth with a single to the right side of the field, boosting Medicine Hat’s lead to 13-0 over the Cardinals.

Yorkton finally solved the Mavericks defence in the bottom of the eighth, as Ryne Niemi smacked a double off Johnathon Smithey to score a runner from third to get on the board.

Entering their final at bats, Medicine Hat wasn’t done with the offence as Wright and Ly padded their stats with RBIs to give the Mavericks a 15-1 lead, which held as the final score.

Every single member of the Mavericks was able to score on Thursday, while all but Reed Odland contributed with at least one RBI.

Conn led the charge with a 2-4 showing at the plate with 3 RBIs, while Johnson wasn’t too far behind with four hits and a pair of runs knocked in.

Starter Jumpei Akanuma pitched into the seventh inning in Yorkton, blanking the Cardinals while striking out seven batters.

Running a perfect 4-0 record on their road trip so far, the Mavericks are 9-1 in their last 10 games and have only lost once since June 4.

Medicine Hat has now moved four games clear of the Okotoks Dawgs for first place in the West Division, holding the second-best record in the WMBL at 18-3.

The Mavericks’ Saskatchewan road swing winds up on Friday night, as they face off against the Cardinals for the final time this season at 7:05 pm.
