Federal funding coming to help develop eco-friendly plant based proteins

CALGARY, AB. – Prairie farmers who grow plant-based protein sources are looking to break into the mainstream, with a little help from some federal funding.

They say eco-friendly beans and lentils are the key to sustainably feeding the world’s growing population.

Pulse Canada C-E-O Gordon Bacon says Canadian farmers are poised to become some of the world’s top producers of the protein-rich plants partly due to a government-funded incubator.

Earlier this month, an alliance of 120 companies and organizations focused on plant-based proteins won a spot in the government’s 950-million-dollar supercluster proposal.

The incubator is expected to get 150-million-dollars in federal funding.

It’ll go towards research into everything from improved farming methods, to new food possibilities for flax, hemp, oats and pulses such as chickpeas, beans and lentils.
