CALGARY — Western Hockey League players will see a shorter schedule next year.

The WHL Board of Governors announced Thursday it has adopted a 68-game schedule for the regular season, which will take effect next season.

According to a news release, the decision will reduce travel and provide more time for players to focus on training and skill development, along with their academic studies.

The decision now means all member leagues in the Canadian Hockey League (WHL, OHL, QMJHL) will play the same number of regular season games,
