MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s the inaugural year for the St. Francis Xavier sports academy, and it’s hard to find any fault in the program after its first seven weeks.

28 students from Grades 4 to 6 make up the academy, according to lead instructor Kennedy Werre, helping fuel the next generation of athletic superstars in our city.

Its main vision is to introduce students to a variety of sports while getting them out of the classroom and into a physical learning environment.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, students in the academy take part in 2.5 hours of physical activity, rotating through baseball, soccer, volleyball, and basketball as core sports. Students also experience ‘explore days’, where they get to try out a new sport such as golf, cross-fit and tennis.

CHAT News caught up with student-athletes McKenzie Fauth, Lado Pitia, and Marli Bouvette to hear what it’s like to be a part of the academy. Plus, Werre sheds more light on what goes into making it a success.
