Winnifred “Win” Wilson of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Al Wilson, passed away on her 92nd birthday, June 3, 2022. She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Graeme Wilson (Sharon Hayward) and Joan Wilson (Darwin Leacock); five grandchildren, Amy (Tim), Tyrell, Cordell, Cole and Alexis; one sister Joan Hoekstra. Win was predeceased by her husband Al on April 28, 2019; one grandson Evan; her parents Jennie and John Hobbelink; one brother Morris and one sister Frieda.
After graduating from the Galt School of Nursing, Lethbridge, Alberta in 1952 as a RN, Win worked in several facilities, eventually specializing as a NICU nurse at the Medicine Hat Hospital. Long before air ambulances existed, she rode in the back of a station wagon that was equipped as a neonatal ambulance, transporting critically ill babies to Calgary. Her training and dedication saved many little lives. She retired after 30 years of service. She was a huge advocate of breastfeeding and a founding member of the Medicine Hat Breastfeeding Mothers Support Group. After retiring from nursing, she became a Prenatal Educator at the Health Unit. She made a positive impact on the lives of countless mothers, fathers, and babies. Through the Medicine Hat Support Group and many other volunteer organizations, Win shared her heart, home, and telephone line 24 hours a day to the families of Medicine Hat and area. She offered emotional, financial, and practical support wherever there was a need.
Win was a member of St. John’s Presbyterian Church for over 67 years, her deep and steadfast faith sustained and uplifted her throughout her life.
She was married to the love of her life, Al for 64 years. Together they were loving parents and true partners to each other and their community. They passionately believed that they had a responsibility to make the world a better place for everyone, regardless of heritage, religion, economic position, or social standing.
Win will be greatly missed and forever loved by her family and friends.
Thank you to Dr. Jeraj, and the amazing staff of Good Samaritan Society for the tender care provided to her during her last days.
A private graveside service will take place at Hillside Cemetery with Rev. Jeffrey Lackie officiating.
