Wayne Stubert
1949 – 2025
It is with profound sadness that the family of Wayne David Stubert announce his passing on August 13, 2025 at the age of 76 after a courageous battle with cancer. Wayne was a loving husband, a proud father, and a devoted grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gloria Stubert; daughters, Christie (Brian) Stacey and Michelle (Chris) Laing; and his cherished grandchildren, Ashley and Eric Webber and Hailey and Kaiden Yaremchuk. Siblings, Terry Stubert, Gerald (Clara) Stubert, Kenneth Stubert, Sharon (Ken) Boone, Daniel (Nessie) Stubert; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Wayne was predeceased by his mother, Helen Rosina Stubert and father, Edward Stubert.
Wayne was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and lived a lot of his younger years in the Viking and Dunmore area. He was introduced to Gloria by her aunt and they hit it off. They wed in 1972 and settled in Medicine Hat to start their family. They welcomed Christie in 1975 and Michelle in 1977.
Wayne worked various jobs over the years but spent the bulk of his working years at Cablevision/Monarch Cable which eventually evolved into Shaw Cable. Wayne dedicated 44 years to the cable company and was a staple on many construction sites. You’d usually see him up in the bucket truck working on a line or down in a ditch, digging a trench. Wayne was a hard worker and was respected by his many colleagues over the years, many whom would visit him after his retirement.
Wayne, lovingly nicknamed Weiner, was a jack of all trades. He was able to help his daughters with any project or repair that was needed whether it was building something, painting, plumbing, or just “MacGyvering” something to get it to work.
Wayne could often be found finding something to fix, puttering in his garage or researching his ancestry once he was retired. He had a green thumb that many were envious of and you would often find him in his garden either weeding, moving, or trimming his many plants. He made his yard into a beautiful oasis that was enjoyed by many including wild birds that would come for the treats he would leave out for them.
Wayne had big dreams of starting a worm farm, a tree farm, a market garden, purchase a motel in Taber or even to start up a pig farm. Ultimately, his biggest dream came true when he moved his family to an acreage in 1987. While his daughters dreamt of horses and in-ground swimming pools, they got dugouts with mud puppies, chickens, turkeys, dogs, cats, snakes, muskrats and beavers instead. As hard as that time was with working full time and trying to fix up a home and keep up with a large yard, Wayne gave his family many wonderful years and precious memories from the years at the acreage, that the family look back on fondly.
Wayne had an inquisitive and adventurous nature. He could be found foraging for strange berries or mushrooms, popping them into his mouth before making sure they weren’t poisonous or taking his girls on long hikes in the forest until their feet hurt. He would sit on the front step with his girls wrapped in blankets to watch a lightning storm to help take away any fears and to enjoy the wonder of nature. It was always an adventure! Once he had grandchildren, he would pass on the same traditions with them, providing them with the same beloved memories.
Wayne was a quiet, humble man who was loved by everyone. His charismatic nature would leave a lasting impression on anyone he met. He could make a funny voice or come up with something out of the blue that would make us laugh uncontrollably. Wayne will always be one in a million and he will be dearly missed by anyone lucky enough to have gotten to know or love him.
A come and go tea in memory of Wayne will be held at 880 Ross Glen Drive SE on Saturday, August 16, 2025 between 11 am – 3 pm.
