FUNERAL POSTPONED

Wayne Thomas Craven slipped away quietly, gently on Friday, April 23, 2021 at age 80. He leaves behind his beloved family, wife and touch stone of 55 years Sandra (Brown), his two sons, Boyd (Sherry) and grandsons Darrian and Cooper, and Mark (Sasha) and grandchildren, Eleandra and Blake; sister-in-law Marlene Craven, cousin Nicki (Bradshaw) Hudec; in-laws Darlene and Norman Keeler, Lori and Darcy Moch; numerous nieces and nephews; many dear friends, especially Ken and Missi. He was predeceased by father Milton ‘Mickey’ Craven, mother Mary Craven-Williams, step-father Alec Williams and brother Ron.

Wayne was blessed with an abundance of gifts, gifts which he used wisely to create a rich and fulfilling life. In 1961, Wayne accepted a position as ‘nightman’ at CHAT Radio, thus beginning an eight-year association with the company. His deep rich voice, good looks and easy-going personality suited a career in broadcasting and he flourished. Time spent at CHAT Radio and TV, provided opportunities to hone skills which would serve him well in business, politics and the Arts. From 1969 to 1973, he operated P. Lawson Travel Agency. In 1974, he became a partner in Century Homes/Craven and Hall Real Estate, with brother Ron and Fred Hall.

In 1963, Wayne joined the cast of South Pacific, his first musical. This began a fifty-year commitment to community theatre using his talents to act, produce and direct more than 35 plays and musicals.

1989 saw Wayne enter the political arena. Such was the public’s on-going support, Wayne served a total of six terms, each time leading the polls.

His sense of community stemmed from his formative years living on the Flats. “People sat on their porches, you could smell the cooking, hear and see kids playing. You knew your neighbors.” He spoke with such pride and respect.

Away from the lime light, however, Wayne the husband, the parent was a quiet, introspective individual. Relaxing to jazz, puttering around the yard, enjoying the ‘noises’ of grandchildren and family gatherings grounded him.

Cancer took his life, but not his soul or our memories.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions,  the funeral service will be postponed until such time that the entire family will be able to attend.  Announcements will be made at that time.
