Verna Elliott
September 22nd, 1938 – May 18th, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our family’s matriarch, Verna Esther Elliott on May 18th, 2026.
Born September 22nd, 1938, to Emanual and Anna Miller, she started life in Golden Prairie. After the passing of her mother in 1947, when she was 9 years old, they relocated to Medicine Hat. She was then predeceased by her father in 1969. Verna married Glen Elliott in Medicine Hat on June 29th, 1956. They were married for 65 years before Glen passed away on January 19th, 2022. Verna was also predeceased by 2 sons, Stanley in September of 2025 and Dale on May 17th, 2026, approximately 13 hours before her passing.
Verna went from townsfolk to countryfolk quite drastically. After Glen and Verna were married, she went from Medicine Hat with all the modern conveniences to the middle of nowhere, Etzikom to a farm that Glen had rented. There were a few extra trips to either Medicine Hat or Bow Island till Verna figured out how much was needed for a month’s worth of groceries. Even later after moving to Seven Persons, explanations had to be made to guests that they needed to ignore the expiry dates on things such as milk as 12-14 cartons were bought at once then put in the freezer and then thawed needed.
In 1962 they moved to Seven Persons and resided a half mile north of where the family farm would become what it is today. Verna was involved from the beginning as Waterview Red Angus became an entity in 1972. Boy, was she upset with a baby on her hip when Pam and Glen returned from an auction and had invested $10,000 for 1 bull and 4 heifers. She always said that she never owned her own cows but was right along side Glen as things grew. In 2022 the ranch received recognition for 50 years with the Canadian Red Angus Association, but specifically Red Angus, also, the baby on her hip turned 50 that year. When Glen passed away in 2022 Verna got her cows as all his became hers. The cow herd that they had worked so hard build had come full circle.
When talking to family members the description of Verna was a spicey lady and some as their favorite aunt. Verna was the first female 4-H leader of the Seven Persons 4-H Beef Club. She became involved with 4-H at Club, District, and Regional levels. Glen and Verna received the South Region Friend of 4-H in 1992 for their involvement She was so happy to see other members of her family involved at the same levels as she was. She was always willing to give advice whether helpful, prejudiced, or just because.
Verna was always a woman to be reckoned with whether it was because she lost her mom at age 9 or Glen challenged her later life. It could have also been the 5 children that she brought into this world. It might be a rumour that the last 2 might or could have pushed her over the edge! She was the matriarch of our family and deserved the utmost of respect. She will be sadly missed by her remaining family, daughter, Pam (Donnie) their children, Kimberlee, Kyle (Joelle), and Kurtis; sons, Wayne (Roxanne), Terry (Shirley) their children Wyatt (Jaqueline) and the sparkle in Great Grandmas eyes, Katie and Kristin, Jurnee (Steven), Tate, Sydney (Colin); grandson, Shawn Schneyderberg; brother, Harold Miller (Cecile); sister, Judy Loran (Gerald); brother-in-law, Donald Elliott; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Grace Memorial on Sunday, May 24th between 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in Verna’s memory may be made to Cactus Country 4-H District c/o 10530 Range Road 74 Cypress County AB T0K 1Z0.
