1925 – Val Volk – 2021
Valentine “Val” Volk of Medicine Hat passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at the age of 95 years, beloved husband of the late Phyllis Volk. He leaves to cherish his memory four children, Wayne Volk (Lori Dover), Shirley Kultgen (Ken Malcomson), Louis Volk and Elizabeth Kostelansky (George McDode); twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, one brother Joe (Delores) Volk; one sister Lena Kuntz; one sister-in-law Shirley Volk as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his his parents Pauline and Martin Volk; his wife Phyllis on October 1, 1995; seven brothers, Gabe, John (Joy), Tony (Lucille), Nick, Martin and two in infancy. Dad was born May 1, 1925 at Elssas Russia. He immigrated to Canada with his parents and two brothers in 1926 and arrived in Odessa, Saskatchewan in 1927. Leaving there, they made their home in Schuler and so his life began. Dad met mom the former Phyllis Weisgerber, and they married November 5, 1947. Together they farmed south of Schuler for fourteen years and in 1961, they moved into Schuler where dad became a grain buyer for the Pioneer Grain Company. Dad was active in the community playing ball, curling, volunteering, was a member of The Knights of Columbus and holding a position on the community board. He semi-retired and moved to Medicine Hat but still farmed and worked for Western Land Service. When he finally retired mom and dad had the opportunity to travel to many places in Europe, Hawaii, Carribean Cruises and took many bus trips to Vegas. Dad loved to talk and visit and met many friends for coffee at the Medicine Hat Mall (thank you Phillop). Thank you to the River Ridge long term staff for the wonderful care you gave dad. Rest in Peace dad. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. (Masks are mandatory) Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Roque Pereira celebrant. Family and friends are invited to remotely attend the funeral mass by searching for the Pattison Funeral Home youtube page where the video will go live 10 minutes prior to service time. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. Those who wish to remember Val with a donation, may do so to the charity of your choice.
