Thomas “Tom” Gordon Fry
April 22nd, 1958 – February 4th, 2025
Thomas Gordon James Fry, 66, of Medicine Hat, Alberta, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, after an extended battle with spinal nerve damage and infection. Tom was born on April 22, 1958, to Lloyd and Helen Smith in Collingwood, Ontario, and adopted into the James and Bertha Fry family at age 2 1/2, along with his sister Karen. His childhood was not easy. He hitch-hiked to Alberta at age 17 and found his place in the field of sales and customer service, including milk delivery and ice cream sales.
Upon moving to Medicine Hat in 1991, Tom soon after met a young lady, Vivan Unger, at the bowling alley. They were engaged in spring of 1993 and married that August 1st. Significant changes to Tom’s life, including putting his trust in Jesus as his Lord and Savior, were part of this time of personal growth. In the fall of 1994 Tom and Vivian moved to Angus, Ontario to look after Tom’s aging dad. It was a challenging time for both of them, but they were faithful to the commitment they had made to give care. A particular joy for Tom was teaching kids in the Super SunDaze ministry of the Mapleview Community Church in Barrie. Tom and Vivian ran a yard maintenance business and also a cleaning supply store, cleaning commercial buildings in the evenings. They moved back to Medicine Hat in June of 2008 where Tom again worked in sales and customer service. Tom got involved with doing income tax for low income through the CRA, consistently providing this community service at no charge for 10 years, until 2023. In whatever work he was engaged in, and especially the CRA volunteer tax program, he did his job well, he made friends and was appreciated.
In spite of a long deterioration of mobility, Tom engaged in all sorts of activities. In the early years, baseball, and in later years, fishing, darts, bowling and horseshoes, to name a few. He ALWAYS had a joke, a goofy bit or sarcasm or a humorous take on whatever was going on.
He plunged whole-heartedly into everything he did; whether as part of his faith community, his work, his volunteering or his recreation circles.
Tom leaves to remember him, his wife, Vivian; his sister; Karen Fry; nieces, Joanne Morrison and Katie Fry and nephew Justin and children; as well as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces from both Tom’s and Vivian’s families. Vivian and the family wish to express their deep gratitude for the compassion and grace of the caregivers of St. Joseph’s, as well as the Medicine Hat Care Community.
Services will be held at Hillcrest Church on Friday, March 7th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Mustard Seed, or The Root Cellar, organizations that Tom felt strongly about because of his early years of food scarcity.
