Teresa Berg
1944 – 2026
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the death of Teresa Jesse Berg (nee Bateman) in Medicine Hat on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the age of 82 years. She was born to Myrtle and Malcom Bateman on March 3, 1944, in Gravelbourg, SK, and raised in Bateman, SK. Teresa was the third of three children in her family. Sadly, they lost their father in 1948, when Teresa was 4 years old. By the age of 8, Teresa was attending school full-time and helping her mother in the snack shack diner by stocking shelves, scooping ice cream and selling candy and cigarettes. One day, a young man from the Cancer Society noticed Teresa’s dedication and commitment to her mother and her hard work. She later received a letter complimenting her on these attributes and that letter motivated Teresa to a life of service and goodness to others. Teresa completed grade 12 at Bateman School and then went on to graduate from Nurses training at Moose Jaw Union Hospital in 1965. She married Rienharet Berg later that year and moved out to the farm in Bateman. Teresa and Rienharet welcomed three children to their family, Sandra, Linda and Rodney. Teresa lived on the family farm and she took a break from nursing to dedicate her life to raising her family and being a strong member of the community. Teresa and Rienharet spent 52 years on the farm. Teresa described those years as “more busy than others, when the babies were born it was less stressful, but as soon as they were old enough, they were in the truck with me along with their books, their snacks and sometimes their blankets.” She wrote of the excitement that “each new harvest incited as the combine left the yard to comb the field gathering the grain and the smell of freshly thrashed wheat was as distinct as the aroma of freshly baked bread”. Teresa’s passion for helping others never left her and in 1984, she worked hard to renew her nursing license and began working at Gravelbourg Hospital. She went on to be the district coordinator of home care for 10 years and finished her career in a long term care facility until she retired in 2008. During those years, she touched many lives and enriched many families in the surrounding communities. Her plan was to play many games of golf and to spend time with her grandchildren. Some of Teresa’s best memories were spent traveling to Arizona for the winter. She learned to golf, played pool, went swimming, made lots of close friends and enjoyed many, many “happy hours”! Rienharet and Teresa left their farm in 2017 and moved to Swift Current, SK. They spent six years there before relocating to Masterpiece Southland Meadows in Medicine Hat to be closer to family. Here again she found community, close friendships and involved herself in many activities including card playing, sewing and committed to their fitness program. Many of her friends and family say her greatest asset was her ability to listen to everyone and the compassion, empathy and positive attitude towards life she showed and shared to others. Teresa will be forever loved and missed by her husband Rienharet and their three children, Sandra Berg, Linda (Alex) Volk, Rodney (Laurie) Berg; grandchildren, Riley, Ally, Tyson and Aaron; siblings, Garry (Pat) Bateman, Jim Bateman, Walter (Barbara) Bedford and Wendy (David) Sloan; her in-laws, Marg (Don) Norum as well as many nieces and nephews. Teresa was predeceased by her father, Mac Bateman (1948): mother, Myrtle Bedford (Bateman-Hagstrom) (2014); step-father, Reg Bedford (1999) and brothers and sisters-in-law, Lorrie Bateman, Elmer (Jean) Berg, Irene (Peter) Martin and Vern (Janet) Berg.
Don’t grieve for me for now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me I took his hand when I heard him call, I turned my back and left it all I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work or play Tasks left undone must stay that way, I’ve found that peace at the close of day If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow My life’s been full, I’ve savored much, Good friends, good times, my loved one’s touch If my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief Lift up your heart, rejoice with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.
A Celebration of Teresa’s life will be held at the Bateman Community Hall on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MS Canada or to a charity of your choice.
