Sheila Talarico
1924 ~ 2018
Mrs. Sheila Patricia Talarico, beloved wife of Mr. Silvio Talarico, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Home Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at the age of 93 years. Sheila was born on the family farm near Buffalo, AB., on August 8, 1924, delivered by a mid-wife and her aunt, Katherina (Heffernan). She loved to tell stories of growing up during the ‘Pioneer Days’ where water was hauled in a large wooden tank built by her father and pulled by horses. She spoke of days when the house was warmed by coal and wood heaters. She would relay the struggles and fun they had getting to the one room school house often riding in that same wooden tank. Sheila spent many hours with her sibling playmates roaming the vast prairie, coulees and the riverbed along with any chores that had to be completed. Her early school years up to Grade 10 were spent at the Elmslie School. In 1942 she attended school that was located in the Buffalo Hall. Sheila then went to Calgary and after that she worked for two years as a correspondence school supervisor. Following her move to Medicine Hat in 1947, she had various jobs including working in a hardware store and banks in Medicine Hat and Taber. During this period she also attended the Garbutt Business College. She eventually ended up at the Medicine Hat General Hospital where she worked for eight years, first as an Assistant Lab Tech and then an Admittance Officer. In 1950, she met the love of her life, Silvio Talarico and they were married in 1954 at St. Patrick’s Church. Sheila and Tal were completely devoted to each other and were blessed with 63 years together. Sheila eventually gave up her work outside the home so she could concentrate on her most important career, raising three children; Joe, Don and Patty and supporting Tal. Sheila was a great cook, an avid reader and enjoyed writing and sewing. The family enjoyed spending time in their ‘cabin in the mountains’ in Bellevue, AB., nestled in the beautiful Crowsnest Pass. Sheila loved tinkering around in her flower beds which always flourished with the attention she showered on them, as did her family. Her faith in God, sense of humor, strength, courage, gentle acceptance and calm disposition led to many heartfelt talks with those she loved, usually over a cup of tea. It was these times where she would gently bestow her worldly wisdom. Sheila thought she had an ordinary life, but she was extraordinary. She will be cherished and missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her husband, Silvio (Tal) Talarico; son’s, Joseph Talarico, Donald (Lisa) Talarico; daughter, Patty (Ron) Roth; grandchildren, Sasha (Alex) Teierle, Ashley (Dan) Talarico, Melissa (John) Serbu, Kelsie (Cole) Kirchner; great-grandchildren, Emily, Sofia, Brayden, Asher, Austin, Bennett; brother, Ted Anderson; sister, Joan Standish as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Sheila was predeceased by her parents, Bennie and Pauline Anderson; sisters, Alice (Ed) Fischbuch, Iris Anderson; brothers, Eugene (Violet) Anderson and William (Francis) Anderson and their son, Billie. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road S.E., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Father Albert Sayson celebrant.
