Rick Massini
Rick Massini is seeking a fourth term as trustee of the Medicine Hat Public School Division.
He began his teaching career in Calgary in 1972, and moved back to Medicine Hat to teach at Medicine Hat High School in 1980. Since then he’s also worked in administration roles at MHHS, Ross Glen School and the division office.
Massini’s priority areas are to protect the physical and mental health of students and staff, continue to pursue adequate, predictable and sustainable funding for public schools and protecting and preserving public education and the autonomy of locally-elected school boards.
He is concerned about the provincial education funding model, which he says appears to be a “one size fits all” approach that does not take into account differences between rural, rurban, urban and metro jurisdictions.
Massini also says the size, and more so the complexity, of classes have the greatest effect on learning conditions. He says classes are full many classes include a significant contingent of students with learning, medical, mental health, social and economic needs. He says that can pose distractions for other students, and diverts the teacher’s time and energy away from the class.
Rick and his wife Linda have been married 52 years. One of their children is a teacher at MHHS and the other is a lawyer in Vancouver. They both graduated from MHHS; Rick and Linda both graduated from CHHS.
