Rick Redmond
June 24, 1958 – November 20, 2021
Richard (also known as Rick, Ritch, Ritchie or Rickie) William Redmond passed away suddenly at his home in Medicine Hat, Alberta, on Saturday November 20, 2021, at the age of 63 years. Rick was born in Sarnia, Ontario on June 24, 1958, and was the son of Richard and Beverly Redmond. After graduating high school, Rick remained in Sarnia, working with his father at Redmond Mechanical Contractors. Rick then decided to start his studies at the University of Western Ontario and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1984. Rick was an accomplished and well-respected engineer and was always willing to teach and mentor the next generation of engineers. With his degree in hand, Rick moved to Alberta where he began his long career with Royal Dutch Shell. He was involved in the Shell Caroline Plant before moving on to a leadership role at the Shell Scotford Plant in St. Albert. Through his roles at Shell, Rick was able to travel the world and visited many of Shell’s facilities in Western Canada, the United States and Europe. After his time at the Scotford Plant, Rick went on to work in Chester, England. Finally, Rick decided to come back to Canada. He settled in Medicine Hat and held a leadership role at Shell’s Criterion Plant until his retirement in 2015. Once retired, Rick spent much of his time in his yard and garden and found enjoyment in growing his grapes, building his water feature and yard improvements. He became actively involved in the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce, the Medicine Hat Library Board and many other organizations in and around Medicine Hat. He loved living in Medicine Hat and gave back to the community he loved. Rick was also the President of the Medicine Hat Paddling Club. He was an avid fan of the outdoors and enjoyed spending time with family and friends hiking, biking, exploring, and camping. He turned his love of the outdoors into his passion for sailing and kayaking. Rick was also an avid and proud Oiler fan. Rick is survived by his sister, Denise (Paul) Bonner; father, Richard (Shirley) Redmond; cousins, James (Carla) Bell and their children, Colin and Eric and Allison (Yogi) Kim and their children Nicklas, Isabelle and Tyler. Rick spent the last several years in a loving relationship with Corla Prentice, kayaking and exploring the west. He also stayed connected with his old buddies, Tommy Chesher, George Ayers and Mark Olacke. Rick was predeceased by his mother, Beverly Doreen Bell (Redmond); uncle, William Alexander Bell and grandparents, William Tankard Bell, Margaret Alice Bell and Whitney and Effie Redmond. A celebration of Rick’s life will be planned for the Spring/Summer of 2022 in Medicine Hat.
