Phyllis Hammel
1944 ~ 2023
Mrs. Phyllis Lorraine Hammel, beloved wife of Peter J. Hammel, passed away at Masterpiece Southland Meadows in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at the age of 78 years. Phyllis was born on July 5, 1944, in Mercoal, Alberta to Joe and Gladys Mazur, the youngest of four children. When she was a teenager, she moved with her family to Medicine Hat where she attended St. Mary’s School and McCoy High School. Phyllis met Peter while they both worked at Dominon Glass in Redcliff. They fell in love and were married April 4, 1964, at St. Patrick’s Parish. Phyllis was a very talented knitter and seamstress. Not only did she sew her own wedding gown and all of her bridesmaid’s dresses, she did the same for Rita and Linda’s weddings. Throughout their childhoods, Phyllis made most of their clothing, usually identical but in different colours. Thankfully, she passed these valuble skills on to both of her daughters and her granddaughter as well. Phyllis loved to travel and journaled about her many vacations with Peter. They spent 17 years wintering in Yuma, Arizona, where they enjoyed many rounds of golf and happy hours with their friends and where Phyllis was proud to show off her “Hole-In-One” trophy. She cherished her many friendships and nothing demonstrated that more than the over forty years of weekly coffee parties with her favourite neighbour ladies. Above all, Phyllis loved her family. Nothing made her happier than spending time playing with her grandchildren, whether it be a backyard game of badminton, baseball or golf; even if it resulted in a broken window. She truly cherished the many years of family camping and fishing trips and spent endless hours playing board games if it wasn’t her turn to be in the boat. Her favourite was Scrabble and it was always the goal of the grandchildren to outscore Grandma (this rarely happened). She will forever be our Scrabble champion. Left behind to cherish Phyllis’ memory is her devoted and loving husband, Peter; two daughters, Rita (Tony) Huysmans and Linda (Terry) Brilz; grandchildren, Jeffrey Wickenheiser (Michaela), Mitchell Wickenheiser (Carolyn), Ryan Huysmans (Justine Yee), Alan Brilz (Siobhan), Carissa Brilz-Broussier (Thibaut); great-grandchildren, Elliot Wickenheiser, Isabel Brilz, and Henry Brilz as well as her sisters, Ann Westland (Rod) and Diane Mazur. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Gladys Mazur and her brother, Michael Mazur. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all of the staff and caregivers of Masterpiece Southland Meadows as well as to Dr. Lysak for providing such loving care over the last few years. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Parish, 238 – 2 Avenue, N.E., Medicine Hat on Monday, March 6, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Francis Tran celebrant. Luncheon will follow thereafter in the Parish Hall. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery at a future date.
