Patricia Horne
1934 ~ 2025
Patricia May Horne (Bignell) of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Russel Horne, passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Hospital on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the age of 91 years. Surrounded by her 5 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she peacefully left us. She wasn’t just a matriarch: she was the heart of our family, the keeper of the best cookie recipes, a world traveler, and a woman of incredible strength and grace. She left us not scared, hurting or with regret, she really did live her life to the fullest. Her love and warmth will live on in our hearts forever. Pat was predeceased by her husband, Russ (2022), parents Irvin and May (Tennant) Bignell, brothers, Burt, Verle, Wayne, and sister, Sharon. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Brad (Sharon), Terry, Mark, Lindsay (Karen), Dalyce; grandchildren, Nola (Landon), Karissa (Colin), James (Trish), Andy (Tanya), Rob (Amadea), Chloe (Pete), Eli (Michelle), Liam (Maria); great-grandchildren Scarlett, Savanah, Lawson, Jasper, Marcus, Liam, Maisie, Cohen, Carson, Isabelle, Odette; her sister, Arline Grover (Leonard), brother, Jim (Bev) Romane, and sister-in-law, Marguerite Bignell. Born in Big Valley, AB on March 10, 1934, where she was raised and completed her schooling until 1953 when she attended the Royal Alexandra School of Nursing in Edmonton. She met Russ and they were married in 1955, raising 5 children in Drayton Valley, Sundre, Bowden, and Edson, until they moved to Iran in 1969, for two years. Medicine Hat became their home in 1971, where Pat was active with Oilwives and met many wonderful people that remained friends through the years. In 1980, they moved to Kansas, where Russ continued his career in the oil industry and returned to Calgary in 1983 with their final move in 1987, back to Medicine Hat. They enjoyed travelling throughout Canada, the USA, international destinations, and spent a decade of winters in Lake Havasu, where they met many good friends. From the deserts of the Middle East to the streets of Montreal, Pat’s adventurous spirit and curiosity about the world were always evident. Pat enjoyed golfing, curling (watching Canada’s recent win at the Women’s World Curling) playing cards, dominos, and lunches with her birthday club. In 2022, they moved into Masterpiece Southlands where she met many wonderful people who became friends, notably her Canasta and Wist groups, especially Doreen and Germaine. Many thanks to all the staff at Masterpiece, Greg/Anna for keeping her fit, the dining/kitchen staff, Karen/Jun, and Home Care for keeping her healthy with a special thank you to Sky, Sarah and Jen; she loved living there and we know she was loved. Thank you to the nurses on 5 West, especially to Fran and Ali for the haircut! Thank you to Dr. Scholtz and all the doctors involved in her stay, especially to the excellent care that Dr. Cathy Horsman gave our parents since 1997. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Pat’s name may be made to Halo Air Ambulance. A celebration of life will be held in May, with an announcement to follow. May she rest in eternal peace.
