1959 – Monica Schlaht – 2021
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Monica Schlaht, beloved wife of Rudy Schlaht. Monica lost her long courageous battle with cancer on Monday June 21st at the age of 61 years. Monica leaves to cherish her memory her children, Justin Schlaht (Catherine Kohls), Jenna (Dustin) Vossler; her grandchildren Haley Schlaht, Kenize Schlaht and Jade Penney. Monica leaves to mourn, her brother Peter (Jody) Leupold and their children Dominic (Claire) Leupold and Desirae (Brandon) Kinahan; one sister in-law Irene (Dale) Plotsky and their children Derek (Jenny) Plotsky, Kyle (Hannah) Plotsky, as well as countless close friends, many cats, fish and birds. She was predeceased by her stepson Chris Schlaht, her parents Hans and Martha Leupold and her father and mother in-law Christian and Amanda Schlaht, her precious dog Zoe and many cats over the years. Monica was born June 23, 1959 in Winnipeg Manitoba, where her parents ran Leos Home Bakery. At the age of two Monica moved with her parents to Medicine Hat where her parents opened the City Bakery and Monica grew up learning the art of baking. Monica married Rudy Schlaht on August 5th, 1984. Monica along with the support of Rudy decided it was in the best interest for her to step away from the bakery and concentrate on raising her family. Monica opened the Costume Shoppe above the City Bakery in 1985, which she operated for 36 years. She actively participated in the kiddie’s parades for many years winning 1st prize several years in a row. Even with Monica’s busy schedule she was always supportive of Rudy through his career and put her children above everything else, even when her health was not the best. She was always super proud of her children and grandchildren’s achievements. Monica was known for her many outstanding qualities, her beautiful smile outlined her positive attitude while facing any challenge with courage, strength, and cheerfulness. She was known for being a fantastic seamstress as well as an excellent baker and cook, her gardening skills were outstanding and was an active member of the horticultural society for many years. Her friends and family would always turn to her for her sound advice. Her talented decorating skills could never be missed, whether it was decorating the house and yard for the holidays or her famous wreaths and shadow boxes. Her door was always open for anyone (and the fridge was always full) she loved to invite anyone and everyone into her home. Monica loved her animals and was always welcoming a new addition into her home or feeding the strays outside. Mom we will love and remember you today, tomorrow, forever and always. Your kind and caring spirit will always be caried in our hearts.Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Monday, June 28th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. (Masks are mandatory) Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend. Family and friends are invited to remotely attend the funeral service. Search for the Pattison Funeral Home youtube page where the video tribute to Monica will go live 25 minutes prior to service time. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery.
