Lucy Towner
1927 – 2022
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom. Lucy Towner (nee Rigo), of Medicine Hat, Alberta, passed away quietly in her sleep on the morning of February 27th, 2022, at the age of 94. She was born to Mr. and Mrs. David Rigo in Hagersville, Ontario on March 23rd, 1927. She was the oldest of their five children, Nora, Louis, John and Joe, who have all passed on to their final reward. She married Frederick Hugh Towner on August 25th, 1951, and is survived by her five children, David (Patty), Catherine (Keith), Susan (Barry), Richard (Trina), and Maria (Wally); 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Her husband, Fred passed away April 15th, 2000.
Lucy began work at the age of 13 at a spinning mill that made wool blankets. She also worked at the Stelco Steel Mill loading brick and in their screw manufacturing facility. She also worked at a munitions factory during the war. In later years, she worked as a crossing guard for the Belmont Elementary School then at The Met department store and later for a mushroom producer in London, Ontario. When she lived in Calgary, she worked for The Bay Warehouse, Marks Work Warehouse and at a lunch counter in a fitness facility in Calgary, Alberta.
Lucy is remembered as a humble and loving person with a big heart and a beautiful soul. As a mom, she was always there for us. She was an amazing cook and loved to garden, read, knit and do word search puzzles. She loved to sing and yodel and brought joy to those around her. She knit over 700 baby hats for the Medicine Hat Hospital. She was especially interested in the Native American heritage, as she lived next door to the Six Nations 40B Reserve near Hagersville, and her dad was very close to many of our native brothers and sisters who lived there at the time. The last 7 years she resided at the Cypress View Foundation where she was thankful for the compassion and care that the staff there showed her. Mom, you will be missed so very much. Please know that you are loved with the deep love only a child can feel for their mother. We have shed our tears at your passing, but we carry on with the joy and comfort that you have moved on to your final reward for a life well lived and are now with God. We wait for the day we will be with you again in glory.
