Laura Yvonne Facchin of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Giacomino “Jack” Facchin, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 30, 2023 at the age of 84 years. Mum was born March 1, 1939 in Petworth, Sussex, England, the fourth of eight children to Richard and Doris Stoner. In 1953, the family immigrated to Canada, initially living in Calder, Saskatchewan and finally settling in Moose Jaw. Mum contracted Tuberculosis on the ship and spent 18 months in Fort San in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, enduring many surgeries. In 1957, she moved back to her family and met her future husband, Jack, while working at St. Anthony’s home. Mum and Dad married in 1959. Lisa was born in 1968 followed by Reno in 1970. At that time the family moved to Medicine Hat. Dad passed in 1974 and Mum was left raising a six and four year old. Mum was a loving and devoted parent, an incredible cook and baker, and hard worker. She worked at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for 21 years before her retirement in 2003. Mum loved to garden and be outdoors. She was one of the few women in town to play cricket and she also enjoyed bowling and dancing. A longtime member of Just Dance Line Dancers, she practised weekly until last year. She was also a member of the Volkesport Walking Club. Her four grandchildren were her absolute joy and she was at every game, recital and competition. She was always happy and friendly and if she knew or recognized you, there was time for a visit. Mum led her life with kindness and compassion. She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Lisa Vermette (Brad Krizan) and her children, Afton and Aidan all of Calgary, and Reno (Shauna) Facchin and their children, Keneel and Jericho all of Medicine Hat; two sisters, Rita Stoner and Pauline (Peter) Leng all of Deal, England; her brother, Rodney Stoner of Dover, England; numerous nieces and nephews in England, Saskatchewan, and Turkey; her extended family, Ron, Wendy, Kole and Casey Van Maarion and her best friend of 68 years, Diana Wilkinghoff. Besides her loving husband, Laura was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Doris Stoner; her brothers, Dickie Stoner and Barry (Sheila) Stoner; her sisters, Joyce (Bill) Calanchie and Vivian (Bill) Baines. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. with Life Celebrant, Pat Grisonich officiating.
