1929 ~ Karoline “Line” Gill ~ 2020

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Karoline Friedericka Gill on September 12, 2020. Born in 1929, Karoline was the daughter of Karl and Louisa Gerstenlauer of Eibensbach, Germany. She completed her early schooling in Eibensbach, though her later studies ended because of the war.

After the war ended, Line met a handsome bachelor, Waldemar Gill. When Waldemar immigrated to Canada in 1950, Waldemar and Line corresponded by air mail. Upon accepting Waldemar’s written invitation to join him and to build a life together in Redcliff, Alberta, she bravely moved to Canada in December of 1951. They wed in February of 1952; their union bore them six children.

Karoline worked at the greenhouses in Medicine Hat for many years, as well as providing catering services at the Redcliff German Canadian Harmony Club. She sang with the German Canadian Harmony Club Choir and was a faithful parishioner at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Karoline’s life was dedicated to Waldemar, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She showered all of her family with love, instilled a strong sense of family values and commitment, and maintained a spirit of adventure. Gardening was her second greatest passion, quiet grace was one of her most outstanding qualities.

After Waldemar’s passing in 2007, Karoline remained in her family home and maintained her steadfast commitment to her family and her gardens until shortly before her passing. Hers was a life well-lived.

Karoline is survived by her children Margot (Jack) Coleman, Megan (Artie) Eggins, Chris (Jaime); Irmgard (Neil) Leslie, Allison, Garth (Katelyn); Rita (Greg) Sumka, Mike (Janice), Mark (Angela); Dorothy (Paul) Casey, Sidney (Andrew) Fraser, Karl (Sarah); Harold (Corinne), Marissa, Cristen (Amir) Hamed, Jaime (Alex); Arthur (Geraldine), Graham and Joshua. She is survived by her brother, Walter (Elana) Gerstenlauer, sisters-in-law Erna Gill and Hilma (Jake) Schlenker. Also surviving her are five great-grandchildren: Izzy, Lyrah, Cayden, Everest, and Hakeem; many nieces and nephews survive her in Germany and here in Canada. She was predeceased by her parents, Karl and Louisa, her husband, Waldemar, her brothers Frederick, Hermann, Gotthilf, Paul, and her sister, Emma.

Given restrictions imposed by the Covid 19 virus, Karoline’s funeral is by invitation only. Friends wishing to pay their respects are welcome to do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday, September 17, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Friday, September 18, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church (515 Sprague Way) with Pastor Ken Edel officiating. Interment will follow in the Redcliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Association of Alberta or to a charity of your choice.
