1949 – Judy VanRiper – 2021

Judith “Judy” Ann VanRiper of Medicine Hat, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at the age of 72 years, beloved wife of the late Richard VanRiper. She leaves to cherish her memory five children, Robert (Jennifer) VanRiper, Greg (Brenda) VanRiper, Nova Miller (Rick Cameron), Christina (Dean) Schmidt and Keri Zylla; her grandchildren, Rob Jr. (Michelle), Heather (Paul), Chazmond (Alison), Joshua (Devon), Zach (Malissa), Andrew, William, Joel, Roman, Tyson, Reed, Billy and Ben; two great grandchildren, Makyla and Kalia; one brother William (Bernadette) Miles as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Eloise and Joseph Miles; and her husband Richard on May 13, 2000.
Judy was born on June 29, 1949, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. From a young age Judy showed her talent for sewing. Making her own graduation gown and, several decades later, creating grad gowns for her twin daughters as well. Her grandchildren also benefited from her sewing skills with several custom-made pajama sets. After graduating from High School in Prince Albert, Judy’s care and compassion led her to her chosen career as a Registered Nursing Assistant in Swift Current, Saskatchewan before giving birth to her daughters Nova and Chris in 1971. After her daughters were born, she moved to Medicine Hat and began working in the fabric department at Robinson’s Department Store where she made many lifelong friendships with her coworkers. After meeting her soulmate and best friend, Dick, in 1977 and marrying him on August 12, 1983, Judy earned her Diploma as a Registered Nurse, graduating in 1984 as the valedictorian of her class. Judy began her career at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital as an RN working on 6th East, Palliative Care and later in PHP until her retirement in 2007. During her career Judy mentored many young nursing students and touched the lives of every patient and co-worker she interacted with. Judy’s love knew no bounds as she took on the role of “mom” to Dick’s 3 children Rob, Greg and Keri without a second thought and they in turn loved and cherished her as their second mom. In her spare time Judy’s indulged in her passion for cross-stitch and crocheting. She created hundreds of beautiful cross stitch pictures that will be treasured by those lucky enough to have received them and many cherished crocheted items for those she loved most. Judy’s daughters, Nova and Chris, were her constant companions. Not only did they all look alike but they were the best of friends.

The Stage three reopening protocol is now in place, therefore there are no longer any restrictions on funeral attendance; everyone is welcome to attend. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend. The service will be live streamed, and family and friends who are unable to attend are invited to watch the service by searching for the Pattison Funeral Home YouTube page. The video will go live 10 minutes prior to service time and will remain on the YouTube page for future viewing. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery.
