Iris Anderson
April 18, 1926 ~ December 30, 2017
Ms. Iris Karen Anderson passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at the age of 91, with family by her side. Iris was the fifth child of Ben and Pauline (nee Heffernan) Anderson. She was born on her grandparents homestead, Tom and Alice Heffernan, North of Buffalo, South of Cappon on the edge of what is known as Lonsome Coulee. Iris attended public school at Emslie School until grade 9, Buffalo High School to grade 11 and completed High School at Oyen in the mid 1940’s. Iris furthered her education at a Business School in Medicine Hat. She used her education in various vocations, office positions, bank teller and supervisor teacher. Iris returned home to the family homestead at Buffalo when her mom’s health began to fail in the early 1960’s. With the compassion and care that Iris provided, ‘Grandma’ enjoyed life on the farm for many years. Iris spent her days caring for their home, garden and all the small farm animals. She welcomed all the nieces and nephews that spent summers with grandma. Iris shared her love for the walks in the coulee’s behind the house exploring all that nature provided, finding kittens in the haystack and caring for a favorite dog or two. As the nieces and nephews spent less time at the farm, Iris started a new job as school custodian for Buffalo School. She continued her work until retirement in 1986. Iris was a long time member of the Buffalo Ladies Club, honorary lifetime member of the Buffalo Ag Society and a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Acadia Valley. Iris was someone you could all count on, a special person to everyone in the family, a neighbor who enjoyed a cup of tea, cookies or cake with friends and a helping hand in her community. She is cherished by all who knew her and the family is grateful to have shared so much with their Aunt. Iris moved to Medicine Hat when her mobility issues began to take a toll on her and took up residence at Masterpiece Retirement Home in Medicine Hat to be near her family. Iris is survived by her siblings, Ted Anderson, Sheila (Tal) Talarico, Joan Standish; cousins, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Ben and Pauline Anderson; siblings, Gene Anderson, Alice Fischbuch, Bill Anderson; brother-in-law, Ed Fischbuch; sisters-in-law, Violet (Anderson) Johnson, Francis Anderson and nephews, Billy Anderson, Robert Stenhouse and Myron Kulyk. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, 238 – 2 Avenue N.E., Medicine Hat on Monday, January 8, 2018, at 2:30 p.m., with Reverend Father Francis Tran celebrant.
