Honourable James Philip Wambolt
(1932 – 2022)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Father and Grandfather, James Philip Wambolt on April 20, 2022. Phil was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia by his parents Charles James and Mary. He attended Kings College and worked at his family business, J.P. Wambolt in Halifax for several years.
Phil married the love of his life Elizabeth McCully in 1956. They had four children, Brenda, Garth, Paul (Karen), Richard (Diane). Phil and Beth, astute in their assessment of the future of the family business sought out a better career. So, despite, and frankly due to, having the four young mouths to feed, they made the life changing decision to enrol in law school at Dalhousie University. Phil successfully graduated in 1970 and the world was their oyster. We fondly remember Mom and Dad leading a family meeting and spreading out brochures on the coffee table from a dozen cities across Canada. The kids successfully lobbied for the city that bragged about having the most outdoor pools per capita in Canada! A few months later Phil and Beth packed up the kids and a very restless cat in a brand new station wagon and headed West to Medicine Hat.
Phil joined the Horsman Law office and eventually became a partner with Jim. A few years later he opened his own practice. He filled the role of City Solicitor in Medicine Hat and was accredited to the Queen’s Council. In the ensuing years, Phil was encouraged to put his name forward for the role of Provincial Court Judge. This resulted in a very successful career in that role for 20 years. During those years, Phil and Beth thoroughly enjoyed trips to destinations around the world. They raised the four children who attribute their successes and happy lives to the love and support they were so fortunate to enjoy throughout their upbringing. Phil made us all very proud as a member of the Medicine Hat Community Association, served as a member and President of the Rotary Club and member of the Cypress Club and Shriners (where he also made us a tad nervous riding around on those ATVs in parades around the Province). Phil and Beth were so extremely proud of their Grandchildren Brittany, Jack and Sam and loved spending as much time as possible with them.
After Phil retired he and Beth thoroughly enjoyed meeting with friends and family on and off the golf course and around the world.
He grieved every day the loss of Brenda in 1976 from a motorcycle accident and Beth from cancer in 2009.
The entire family wishes to sincerely thank the wonderful team at Masterpiece Southland Meadows. There are too many of them to name over the years while thoroughly enjoying living there but their exceptional care, kindness, friendship and patience was truly appreciated by Phil and all of us.
The family will honor Phil’s wishes with a small family celebration of life in the coming months. Phil will be reunited with his beloved daughter and wife in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers we invite you to make donations to The Shriner’s Patient Transportation Fund www.abshriners.com/ways-to-donate.
