The family of Herman Wahl is deeply saddened to announce his passing on Friday March 5, 2021 at the age of 86 years. Herman died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Fran; his children: Bev Wahl (Jim Huculak), Angelee Zon (Dwayne), David Wong (Kathy) and Randy Wong (Eunice); as well as thirteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Robert Wahl (Arlene). He was predeceased by his parents, Adolf and Ida Wahl, and one brother Herb Wahl.
Herman was born in Medicine Hat on September 22, 1934, and grew up in Redcliff. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1957 with a degree in Engineering. While at university, he also earned a private pilot’s license, and enjoyed flying his own plane as a hobby for years.
In 1959, he moved back to Redcliff to take over the family business, Redcliff Greenhouses, for his ailing father. Over the next 50 years, he expanded and modernized the business, introducing many innovations in the production and sale of flowers and vegetables. He had a keen interest in the greenhouse industry and was a founding member of the Red Hat Co-op. Herman was always open to learn more and happy to share his knowledge with others, and to this end he served on many boards for Flowers Canada, Roses Incorporated, the Brooks Horticultural Station, and the Olds Horticultural School.
Always a strong community supporter, Herman served on the Redcliff School Board for 17 years, the Redcliff Planning Commission, the Gordon Memorial United Church Board, the Redcliff Chamber of Commerce, and the Redcliff Library Board. He was a Charter member and a life member of the Redcliff Lions Club, and was an honorary life member of the Medicine Hat Rotary Club. The Redcliff Lions dedicated a park in his honor in 2009.
With all this activity, Herman still found time to be a loving husband, father, and good friend. Fran and Herman travelled extensively, and spent many cherished vacations in Barbados. His children will always remember the annual summer camping trips to Mara Lake. Herman was devoted to his family and led by example. He enjoyed spending time with friends, socializing, golfing, and even joining in the odd game of poker. His quiet wisdom and his sense of humour will be dearly missed by family and friends alike.
