Gwen Bohnet
1948 ~ 2023
Gwen Bohnet, of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 10th, 2023, at the age of 75 with her family by her side. Gwen is survived by her husband of 57 years, Fred; four sons, Blaine (Kim) of Bow Island, Darren of Medicine Hat, Brian (Deeanna) of Medicine Hat, and Brad (Amanda) of Olds. She will be lovingly remembered by her eight grandchildren, Kendra (Jens), Troy (Maria), Dylan, Rebecca, Austin, Alexis, Drew and Danika, as well as two great-grandchildren, Greyson and Emery. She was looking forward to meeting her third great-grandchild in a few short days. Gwen also leaves behind her sisters, Joyce Noble and Sharon (Ivan) Jesse and well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Viola and Edward Seitz; her father-in-law and mother in law, Daniel and Mary Bohnet, and her brother-in-law, Donald Noble. Gwen was born in Medicine Hat on April 22, 1948. She grew up on a farm in the Little Plume area and attended her early years at Antelope Cut School and her senior years at Medicine Hat High School. Growing up she much preferred being outside working with her dad than being in the house. Gwen and Fred met in their teens, and were married September 25, 1965. They moved out to their Orion farm in 1966 and would continue to farm and raise their family there for many years. They had their first son, Blaine (in 1966) then followed by Darren (in 1968), then Brian (in 1971) and finally Brad (in 1973). Gwen had to work very hard in those early years milking cows twice a day, preparing meals for Fred and the boys in the field and doing many other household chores. In 1981, Fred and Gwen starting driving school bus and they kept their contract right up until the Manyberries school shut down. She enjoyed all the bus kids over that time and extra visits she could have with their parents while picking up and dropping the kids off. Keeping an extra tidy house was always very important to her, she was an outstanding farm wife. Gwen was famous for her amazing baking and cooking, and was always happy to share her goodies. Her go to favourite meals desired by all were strudela and cream chicken and knepfle and cream cucumbers and lettuce. She helped organize many of the bridal and baby showers held in the community. Gwen had a great love for dancing and enjoyed passing on these skills to her sons. You could always find her on the dance floor at any wedding or social event until late into the night. She was the community grandma and loved to babysit all the neighbour kids. Gwen enjoyed spending a lot of time in her flower and vegetable gardens. She canned hundreds of jars of pickles and fruit in the summer months. Taking pictures and videos were very important to her, so anywhere she went she was often busy trying to capture the moment. In 2013, Fred and Gwen moved off the farm into Medicine Hat. She was excited to spend more time with her sisters having coffee and going on shopping outings. Visiting with people was always easy for Gwen so it didn’t take long before she made new friends in her community, and enjoyed many garage visits with the neighbours. The highlight of Gwen’s life was definitely her grandchildren or as she called them ‘her sweeties’. She was a hands on grandma and always made the time to play endlessly and bake with the kids. She was always up for a quad ride or making a few trips back and forth to the barn to get kittens to bring into the house to play with. She would never say no to playing a game, doing some colouring, playing store, doing dress up or taking out every single blanket to make some pretty crazy forts. She always made sure the kids knew she was only a phone call away. She was proud of each and every one of the kids, and all their accomplishments, and always made sure to tell them how much she loved them. Her heart was always so full and it overflowed onto others. We will miss her very much and are very thankful to have had her in our lives. The family wishes to thank all the medical staff on 4 west for their support in the last few days of Gwen’s life, as well as the many home care workers and Dr Mastel for all the care over the years.
