1928 ~ Grace Semenok ~ 2021

Dorothy “Grace” Merle Semenok of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late William “Bill” Semenok (who passed away on September 26, 1981) went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Tuesday May 18th, 2021 at the age of 93 years. Grace, much loved mom and grandmother, will fondly be remembered by her sons, Irving (Charis) Semenok of Banff and Brian (Tammy) Semenok of Medicine Hat and her four grandchildren, Landan Semenok of Canmore, Colton (Kristi) Semenok of Kelowna, Matthew Semenok of Medicine Hat and Travis Semenok of Medicine Hat. Her grandkids have many great memories of their grandma, especially her homemade buns, brownies and Nanaimo bars. She would always bake for any occasion, even to carry on the Greyhound bus at Christmas when going to Banff for the holidays. Grace is also survived by her brother, Ian (Myrtle) Hope and also, numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by, her parents, Thomas and Annabelle Hope, and siblings, half brother George Hope, sisters, Winnie (Lloyd) Bowyer, Eilee Barsn (Herbert) Drever, Marie (Maurice) Drever, and brothers Wilfred (Gerty) Hope, and Ken Hope. Grace was born January 28th, 1928 in the Caswell District, Saskatchewan on her family farm that was named “Maple Springs Farm” by her great grandfather, because of the natural spring that flowed there. Grace is the fourth youngest of seven children. She started her schooling at the Caswell School, south of Piapot, Saskatchewan, and completed her schooling in Victoria, B.C. After that she continued her education at the Garbutt School of Business and graduated with an office management diploma, Medicine Hat. In 1945, Grace accepted a position with the Department of National Revenue Income Tax Division in Regina, Saskatchewan. Later transferred to the same Department in Vancouver, B.C and lived there until 1954. Grace had decided to return to Maple Creek and then later met Bill (William) Semenok and they were married June 28, 1955. They had two wonderful sons, Irving Edward, in 1957, and Brian William in 1964. In 1954, Grace accepted a position with the Maple Creek Health Clinic in the front office until 1962. After that she continued to accept various positions including, Russel & Needham Architect (1971-1977) and for the City of Medicine Hat Museum from 1977-1982. Grace then decided to invest in two struggling printing businesses and re-located them to the North Railway location and called it the “Print Stop”, rebuilt the business and after 12 years sold the business and was rewarded for all her hard work. Mom had taken on a few volunteer jobs including volunteering at Hillcrest Church, the Auxiliary Association at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. In between volunteering she went on numerous vacations including Israel, Scotland, Alaska, California, Southern United States and many, many trips, camping to Christina Lake in B.C., and Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan. She spent many a night in front of the fire reading her books and sipping her campfire sludge(coffee). Playing Bridge with her gang was a must, twice a week and included, no phone interruptions while the marathon Bridge game was on. And while retired, no phone calls prior to 9 a.m., nor would you call while she was on her coffee visits with her friends, between 10am – noon most days. One thing about mom was, “you always knew where you stood with her, she always told you the truth, even, if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear!” The family wishes to extend their gratitude to: Dr. Charles Aniagu, Dr Tessier, Dr. Foley, Dr. Best and all of the 4W staff, Endoscopy Staff, Emergency staff at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, and the incredible staff and residents at Chinook Village who were a second family to her. A special thank you to the staff at St. Joseph Hospice for all their wonderful care. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private funeral service will be held in the Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church (3785 13th Ave SE) on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Lance Duncalfe officiating.
