Gertie Sawicki September 22, 1939 ~ January 24, 2025 It is with profound sadness that the family of Gertrude Patricia ‘Gertie’ Sawicki announce her sudden passing on Friday, January 24th, 2025. Gertie, beloved mother, sister, grand- mother, and friend passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with family by her side. Gertie found joy in her family and friends, and took great pride in keeping in contact with as many people as she could. Born in Port George, Nova Scotia, Gertie’s eastern heritage was something she proudly carried through her life, especially in her love of seafood. She met her husband, Michael Edward ‘Ed’ Sawicki, and they were married soon after. Ed’s history in the Royal Canadian Air Force took them worldwide, finally retiring in Cold Lake, AB., later, moving to Kimberley, BC., Gertie’s desire to make a difference in people’s lives manifested in becoming a Foster Parent. For several years, many at-risk children would experience her stern, but kind voice, and her endless well of love. Life brought them to Faro, YK., Mayerthorpe. AB., and again to Kimberley before finally settling down in Medicine Hat. In her later years, Gertie enjoyed visits with family and friends, reading, crocheting, or sleeping in her computer chair. She was a passionate, caring, woman who leaves behind a legacy in the family she raised. Gertie leaves behind her sons, Michael (Cynthia), David (Alissia) and Chris (Erin); grandchildren, Amber (Mika), Sara (Travis), Nathan (Keisha, daughter Bowynn), Zachary (Madi), Erin, and Banks. Also left to remember Gertie are her brothers Lyman, Paul, Neil, David, and Lloyd, along with several nieces and nephews. Gertie was predeceased by her husband, Ed; parents, Rupert and Bernice; sons, Kevin and Gary, sisters, Paulette and Wendy, and brother, Rich. The family would like to thank home care support, the medical staff at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and Dr. Motsi for their care and support of Gertie. A private family service will be held at a later date.
