Geraldine Christine “Gerry” Helmer, beloved wife and best friend of Gordon Helmer of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, September 7th, 2017. Gerry also leaves to cherish her memory two children, Scott (Courtney) Helmer and their children, Max and Addison, Tanis (Richard) Ziegler and their children, Tyson, Logan, and Jayda; two sisters Carolyn Campbell, and Annette White of San Francisco, California; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Samuel and Christine Campbell, as well as her father and mother in-law, Herman and Lydia Helmer. Gerry was born and raised in Medicine Hat. She lived in Scotland for almost two years as a young child and came back to Medicine Hat to attend school. She met the love of her life, Gordon Helmer, and they were married on December 11, 1965 in Medicine Hat. Gerry had an outgoing personality and engaging wit; she loved to talk to any and every one. She was devoted to her family and especially loved baking for her grandchildren. Gerry loved to garden and took pride in her beautiful yard. She enjoyed going for coffee with friends and loved to read a good book when she had the time. She worked for over thirty years for the Medicine Hat School District 76 as a teacher’s assistant, eventually retiring from Herald School. Gerry passed away after a very courageous battle with cancer with her family and friends by her side. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at St Joseph’s Carmel Hospice for their care of Gerry. The Funeral Service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with Gary W. Goran officiating. Memorial gifts in Gerry’s memory may be made to the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre. Condolences may be sent to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Gerry Helmer.
