It is with profound sadness that Joanne announces the passing of her beloved life partner, George John Metka. He passed away in Maple Creek, SK., on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at the age of 93 years. Along with Joanne, George is survived by his sons, David (Sherry) Metka and Craig (Tanya) Metka; Joanne’s daughter, Tracy (Darcy) Klein; grandchildren, Scott (Melie) and their daughter, Camilla; Brittany (Chad) and their children, Quinn and Simon; Stephanie (Josh) and their children, Lily, Hayden, Adeline and Logan; Nicole (Nick) and their son, Ford; Charlene (Mark) and Shelby (Reid). He is also survived by his brother, Gordon (Monica) Metka as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, George Metka in 1981; mother, Nellie in 1998 and his sister and brother-in-law, Jean (Ken) Hellings. George was born in Moose Jaw, SK. on October 27, 1930, to George Sr. and Nellie Metka. At the young age of 15, he left home and joined the Merchant Marines. George had a distinguished 28 year career in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he was awarded the British Empire Medal for his gallantry and rescue efforts. While in the military, he was married in 1955 and had two sons, David and Craig. In 1977, George moved the family to Maple Creek and became the administrator for the Maple Creek Union Hospital, where he worked until his retirement in 1992. Through his retirement years, George and Joanne enjoyed numerous trips to BC, where they would bring back salmon to can and smoke which they loved to share with friends and family. They also enjoyed frequent trips to the US where they visited David in Texas, explored Nevada and took the occasional trek down to Havre, Montana. During the summer months, you could find George and Joanne tending to their garden or relaxing on the deck with a cold drink. George was also very proud of his Ukranian heritage and never missed a Ukranian Christmas celebration. In 2022, George moved into assisted living and later to long-term care where he remained until his passing. George’s life will be remembered silently by family and friends without the proceedings of a formal funeral service.
