It is with heavy hearts that the family of Freida Widmer, beloved wife of the late Alfred Widmer, announce her passing in Medicine Hat on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at the age of 92 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Howard (Darlene) Widmer and Lynn Widmer; four grandchildren and their families, Deanna & Raymond Ries and their son Brett (Tiffany)and their children, Lilly and Cooper; Colleen & Derek Herter and their sons, Kyle and Mitchell; Kerry & Kim Widmer; and Nicolle Ryan (Lorne Ponath) and her children, Deryan, Laya and Brooke; one sister, Gladys Gervais; one sister-in-law, Faye Friesz as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Rudolph and Bertha Friesz; her husband, Alfred; her two brothers, Harry Friesz and Walter (Irene) Friesz; and one sister, Alice (Albert) Schwabe and a brother-in-law Jo Gervais. Freida was born and raised on the family farm near Golden Prairie, Saskatchewan. She attended Bitter Lake School, and married the love of her life Alfred Widmer on November 27, 1941. They grew their farm and raised their family, making Golden Prairie their home. Freida and Alfred were very active within their community, attending church socials, and enjoying a favorite pastime: dancing. Freida loved to dance and she and Alfred attended many local area functions. Getting together with friends and family, playing cards and just enjoying being with loved ones were very special times in Freida’s life. In 1968, Freida and Alfred left the farm to their oldest son, and relocated to Medicine Hat, where they settled into their new home. Although the two of them continued to be involved on the farm, Freida would not allow herself to be idle, and took on kitchen duties at the Haven of Rest Nursing Home. She enjoyed cooking and stayed on until 1973. Freida continued to pursue various interests in the following years, never straying too far from her passions. Following Alfred’s passing in 1979, Freida enjoyed travelling with friends, bowling, playing cards. She was always sure to be on the garage sale hunt every Saturday morning with friends. Her passions included, cooking, baking, crocheting and tending to her flowers and garden. Freida always remained close with family and these are the memories that her family cherish most. She will be fondly remembered for her loving heart, quick wit, infectious smile and delicious meals from her kitchen. Since 2009, Freida resided in Chinook Village and more recently Meadowlands. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday only, from 10:00 to 10:55 a.m. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev.
