Florence Isabel Halmrast (nee Feere) passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at the age of 89 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Valerie Halmrast and Dawn (Keith) Poch, six grandchildren; Brennin (Terri-Anne) Halmrast, Landon (Keisha) Halmrast, Tyson (Madison) Halmrast, Kelsi Rasmuson, Kennedy Poch and Kalli-Anne Poch, her seven great grandchildren; Bree-Anne, Torrin, Mason, Austin, Kinley, Harlow, Isla, and her daughter-in-law Debra Halmrast. Sadly, she was predeceased by her son Rodney Halmrast on February 24, 2007 and her husband of 68 years, Lester Halmrast on December 9, 2022.
Mom was born in Little Woody Manitoba, to Charles and May Feere (nee Worsley), on October 13, 1933. Mom came from a large family and she had six sisters; Pearl Harris, Mary Jenkins, Viola Bergen, Rosanna Labadie, Ruth Park, and Irene Mabel Feere as well as a baby brother who passed on the day of his birth. When mom was a teenager they moved from Manitoba to Coaldale, AB, to work on a sugar beet farm. After a few years the family moved to Lethbridge. Mom enjoyed high school and loved to play basketball. Following high school, she worked at the Catelli Macaroni Factory. She spoke fondly of her years at Catelli’s.
Mom married dad on March 15, 1954, in Cascade Montana. Together, in 1955, they welcomed their son Rodney, Valerie followed in 1958 and Dawn in 1965. Mom worked hard at raising her family. She took great pride in her family, her home and she worked hard at both. When you went to moms you always found homemade baking. Cookies, cake, cinnamon rolls, and we cannot forget the pie. Dad always said mom made the best pie in the country! Mom also enjoyed gardening (nothing like a fresh tomato from the garden), knitting and crocheting. Together her and dad enjoyed camping and bowling.
When Dawn was in high school mom returned to work and became the manager of a little coffee shop called Mrs P’s. A cleaner place to eat could not have been found. She enjoyed being back in the work force.
Mom and dad retired in 1987 and returned to Medicine Hat. Mom enjoyed living down the street from Rod and his family and welcomed “the boys” on their school lunch break. Mom would also laugh when their little dog Jake, whom she adored, would also stroll down the street and scratch at her backdoor for a visit. Mom’s greatest heartbreak was on February 24, 2007 when she learned of the sudden passing of the son she adored.
Mom felt so blessed to be the grandmother of six wonderful Grandchildren. Brennin, Landon, Tyson, Kelsi, Kennedy, and Kalli-Anne. They all held a special place in her heart.
Her blessings continued and she became a Great Grandmother of seven; Bree-Anne, Torrin, Mason, Austin, Kinley, Harlow, and Isla.
Mom was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Mom will be deeply missed and lovingly remember by all of us.
We would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Jani, Dr. Yonkers, Lara, Sonia, and Jessica for the compassionate care mom received on 4 West.
A private celebration of life will be held on a later date. Those who wish to remember mom with a donation may do so to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, SPCA/Animal Shelter or a charity of your choosing.
