Eugene Thome passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at the age of 88 years, beloved husband of Lydia Thome of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory three children, Agnes (Morley) Anheliger, Andrew (Kathy) Thome and Lore (Emil) Luca; five grandchildren, Cole Anheliger; Stephanie Anheliger (Zachary Nicholson); Adam (Skylar) Thome and their children Alex and Sophie; Janessa Thome and Jessica Luca; four brothers, John (Margaret), Mike, Peter and Rudy as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Christina Thome; his brother, Adolph Thome and sister, Rose (Richard) Schulzki. Eugene was born on April 9, 1932 in Odessa, Russia. He met Lydia in Germany and in 1952 Eugene came to Canada and later sent for Lydia to join him. She arrived in 1958 and they were married. They worked hard to raise their family and were together each day until his passing. .Eugene enjoyed spending time with his family and loved fishing and watching sports. Dad was a romantic at heart, he loved to read a good love story. His wish was for all his grandchildren to be happily married and he would occasionally tease and drop hints to them regarding this matter. He was competitive and loved to play Canasta with family and friends, the best part of which was him winning the game. The weekly phone calls to his brothers were important to him, all of his brothers were loved by him. The family would like to thank Dr. Ciubotaru, Dr. Motsi and the nurses and staff on 4W and 5E for all their care and compassion in the past week. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the church on Monday from 12:00 – 12:55 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in the Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road S.E.) on Monday, October 12, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Iqbal Khurshid officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. Due to restrictions in place regarding COVID- 19 from the Chief Medical Officer of Health – funeral services are now limited to no more than 100 attendees including family, funeral home staff and church participants.
