1940~Eugene Sailer~2026
The family of Eugene “Gene” Sailer of Medicine Hat is saddened to announce his sudden passing on February 20, 2026, at the age of 85 years. Gene was born on May 16, 1940. He was raised on the family farm in the Pashley District east of Medicine Hat. After High School, Gene attended the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, earning a bachelor’s degree and a diploma in Education. He then began a 35 year career as an educator, beginning at Schuler School and finally retiring from Southview Community School. He taught at several other schools in the Medicine Hat School District 76 during that time. In July of 1989, Gene married his wife, Rosemary, and they moved to a small farm outside of Medicine Hat. This was a dream fulfilled, and some of the happiest times for them were being back on a farm. Gene loved reading, fishing, hunting, golfing, growing tomatoes and playing Rummoli. He especially enjoyed spending time with his kids. No matter how long their visits were, they were never long enough. Gene was an avid volunteer for several organizations over the years, something he always took pride in. Gene was predeceased by his beloved wife, Rosemary, in 2021; his parents, Ida and Clarence Sailer; his brothers, Wallace, Leonard, Allan, Melvin, Alfred; and sisters, Doris and Marjorie. He is survived by his children, Nancy (Jim) Burgess, Wayne (Carrie) Rossler, Scott Rossler, and Greg Rossler; his sister, Vivian Schwab; his special niece, Lorrie (Michael) Whiteway, and many nieces and nephews. Our family would like to give a special thank you to all of the staff at Meadowlands for the kindness, compassion and care that everyone showed Gene. We would also like to thank the AHS Home Care team, especially Gloria, for their exceptional care. A private family remembrance will be held on a later date.
