Eric Helgson

1949 – 2025

It is with great sadness the family of Eric Wayne Helgeson announce his unexpected passing in Medicine Hat on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the age of 76 years. Eric is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gail; daughter, Dee (Jay) Ritchie and their children, Avery and Lochlan; son, Jay (Stacy) Helgeson and their children, Tyson, Jaxson and Madison. He was predeceased by his father, Harry; mother, June; brother, Gary and mother-in-law, Kathleen Moss.

Throughout Eric’s many careers – lifeguard, chemical plant worker, printer, butcher, PALM Dairies (Beatrice), AMA Driving instructor and city transit employee – he demonstrated an unmatched work ethic and unwavering commitment to his community and family. Even in his retirement years, Eric gave of his time serving on the board at the condo complex where he and Gail lived.

Eric took great pride in woodworking, crafting projects for around home and for his beloved grandchildren. He had a knack for building more then just objects; he built lasting memories.

Eric could often be found at the rink, court or field as he loved supporting and cheering on his grandchildren and their teams. He was sure to have the pockets of his red jacket full of candies to share.

Eric’s sense of humour was legendary – always quick with a joke and a clever quip as he brought laughter wherever he went.

The family owes special gratitude to the emergency medical staff and to Dr. Ghazal. There are true angels on earth and Gail was fortunate to encounter one that night; thank you Lora Krawiec.

A Come & Go Celebration of Eric’s life will be held at at Reflections (located next to Cook’s Funeral Home), 937 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, February 22, 2025, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. with a short program beginning at 2:00 p.m. Please use south entrance (patio doors).
