Emelie Mayer
April 27, 1931 ~ January 30, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Emelie Louisa Mayer at the Bassano Health Centre on on Monday, January 30, 2024, at the age of 92 years. She was born in Eldersley, Saskatchewan on April 27, 1931, to Andrew and Martha Heslien and grew up on a farm near Tisdale, Saskatchewan. As a young woman, she and her sister moved to Redcliff, Alberta where they went to work in the glass factory. It was while living there she met and married Leonard Mayer. Together they raised five girls. Janice and Carrie were born in Medicine Hat and when Emelie’s father died in a farm accident at Bonnyville, the family moved there to take over his farm. Katherine was born in Bonnyville and Tracy was born two years later in Elk Point. The family sold the farm in 1963 to neighbours and moved to Wainwright where Paula was born. They purchased their second farm in 1967 where they stayed until retirement in 1993. They were very proud of their cattle herd and worked to make it one of the best in the area. Emelie was a hard worker, growing a large garden which she took great pride in. She also worked off the farm and still managed to help with seeding and harvest. In addition to this, she did taxes for fellow workers who couldn’t afford a bookkeeper. She was a beautiful, hard-working, intelligent woman who will be greatly missed by her family. Emilie was predeceased by her father in 1953; her mother in 1967; her sister in 2013; her husband, Leonard in 2001 and her daughter, Janice in 2023. Emelie is survived by her remaining four daughters, Carrie Reimer (Walter), Katherine Ludwig (Al), Tracy Campbell (Clayton), Paula Waddell (Donnie); grandchildren, Laurie Reimer, Roger Reimer, Brooke Lawson, Cara Taber, Lee Taber, Ashley, Curtis and Brandon Campbell, Dustin Waddell, and Megan Whitehead as well as numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
