Elise Grieve
1932 ~ 2018
Elise Eugenie Grieve, passed away at the break of day on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at St. Joseph’s – Carmel Hospice, Medicine Hat at the age 86 years, surrounded by her family. Born in Winnipeg, March 27, 1932, Elise was the youngest child of August and Marie Caroline Dereume and from an early age learned the importance of family and sharing. Moving with her family to New Westminster, B.C., Elise completed her high school education at St. Ann’s Academy and then worked in down-town Vancouver at the Bank of Montreal. She enlisted in the RCAF prior to meeting and marrying, William “Ron” Grieve in 1953. The young family travelled around Canada between Air Force bases at Winnipeg, Edmonton and Goose Bay Labrador before her husband, Ron was discharged and they returned to Burnaby, B.C. Elise was a homemaker and the sudden passing of Ron in 1970, left her as a widow with four young children. After a variety of office jobs, Elise returned to school and graduated as a LPN serving primarily in homecare until her retirement. Moving to Medicine Hat to be closer to her daughters, Elise spent her later years as a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose greatest joy was to cook enough food to feed an army for family celebrations. She also loved to putter in her garden, read good books and taking care of her cats and other animal friends. A private family celebration of Elise’s life will take place at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations in Elise’s name may be made directly to the S.P.C.A, 55 Southwest Drive S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 8E8 or to St. Joseph’s – Carmel Hospice, 156 – 3 Street N.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5M1.
